Proud to finally be able to present this! I haven’t drawn anything Tenchi since 2014, which is crazy, since this was one of the most captivating shows when I was a kid. Cartoon Network’s Toonami block was my life after I came home from school when I was twelve, and Tenchi had some of the most vibrant and colorful animation I’d ever seen. At that point, anime was basically Oops! All Video Game Cutscenes to me - what used to be little treats for beating a sequence of levels were now thirty minute animated chunks that were on TV. This is back when anime VHS were still $30, so having something as beautifully animated as Tenchi on my cartoon channel was insane. Tenchi took the ‘harem’ template of then trending manga stories and expanded on it in its own unique way, blending ancient cursed swords with galaxy spanning antics from dynamic characters. I always loved how Tenchi’s sort of just too pure for everything going on around him, and how he’d protect the ones he loved at any cost. For this piece specifically I pulled up a lot of Tenchi’s promo art, and tried to keep the line weight as consistent as possible. I learned some fun techniques about how the Pioneer AIC team drew light pops on the eyes I might adopt going forward. I had to think more in triangles than curves, so that sort of changed up how I make my usual marks, but I think I got close. Prints are available at 8.5"x11" and 13"x19" and are printed on five star professional photo paper. Print will be signed as well unless otherwise noted!
